Hi Brooke...a place I recommend to 'belong', become a regular and practice Dutch, is a restaurant in the building opposite the main station..the one with Jesus Loves You written accross the top? Its next to the Christian book shop and is called Dwaze Zaken (see www.dwazezaken.nl)
If you are looking for a very quiet place to spend some time take the number 80 bus to the Amsterdamse Waterleiding Duinen and you will be able to walk for hours without seeing another person.
